Hotty Frothy Breakfast

Opposite of cold is?  Your right! Hot is the correct answer, what is hot that was cold?  Now that the weather is cooler, it is nice to have something hot for breakfast, well yes, besides coffee or tea.  (ps if you are looking on this on your phone link over to the website to see the pics)..

And if you want a grain-free breakfast, loaded with protein to stick with you for your busy morning, here you go, the Hotty Frothy Breakfast!    Don’t ya just love a fun name?  Instead of having a smoothie or tucking your protein powder in the back of the cupboard you can make a hot frothy drink! So, here are some flavor ideas, Vanilla,

Caramel Espresso Flavor

or Chocolate Mint…what is great is you can create this with very little sweetener.

Lindsay from pinchofyum.com had this idea on her blog, using just collagen powder and I have adapted it.     There are some flavors that you could try that may be a bit unusual served hot…blueberry hmmm but maybe that would be ok, because we eat blueberry muffins… now I’m thinking up new flavors to try!  See what we started?   I tried vanilla, caramel (using caramel flavoring instead of my homemade caramel sauce), mocha caramel

Mocha and caramel -so deliciou!   oh is that a truffle next to the mug!  Yes! you get to make some very soon!

and chocolate mint with hint of espresso.  My favorite is the chocolate mint then the mocha one.

How to make it- heat up some type of milk, I used Costco’s organic vanilla unsweetened almond milk, unsweetened coconut milk would be good too. I heated mine in the microwave but I think putting it in a pan, adding the other ingredients is a more meditative, peaceful start to one’s day.  I put in plant based vanilla protein powder, I like the one from Trader Joe’s because it doesn’t have stevia in it and I’m not fond of the aftertaste of Stevia.

I also added a scoop of collagen peptides, unflavored but you don’t have to.  Feel free to leave it out if you are being completely plant based.  I am hoping that the collagen will suddenly reduce my wrinkles, take away my saggy chin and make my whole body firmer!  Oh, I hope you’re laughing and not taking me serious for that last sentence!  So after writing about the firmer body…  I had to go do some research on collagen.  I was a bit surprised to find that in studies using mice the ones given collagen had increase of collagen production.  And hydrolyzed collagen is important because it is readily absorbed by the body versus “regular” collagen.   Well, guess I’ll keep using it, just so happens the one I use is hydrolyzed!

Back to what is in my favorite Hotty Frothy morning goodness? I used bit of powdered espresso powder, Guittard’s unsweetened cocoa rouge, (love love Guittard’s..Rouge)

Using my Ninja Coffeemaker to froth it!

and a couple drops of peppermint extract.  Of course you can use fresh mint just as well.  I also added in a spoonful of monkfruit sweetener as my sweetener.  You may want coconut palm sugar, agave or cassava syrup.

To make it frothy you can do what I did and use the frother on your Ninja coffeemaker or use a small whisk.  I will put the small whisk in between my hands like I’m rubbing my hands together to keep them warm and you can whisk a bit of foam that way.

Hotty Frothy Breakfast

A hot frothy protein drink using pea protein powder, collagen powder and flavorings with a bit of natural sweetener.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup organic vanilla almond unsweetened milk (from Costco) or use coconut milk
  • 1 scoop vanilla pea protein powder I used Trader Joe's brand
  • 1 scoop (optional) hydrolyzed collagen peptides, unflavored leave out for vegan or completely plant based

Flavor Ideas:

Chocolate Mint Mocha

  • 1 tablespoon Guittard Cocoa Rouge or use cacao powder
  • 1 tablespoon Monkfruit Sweetener or other sweetener
  • 2-3 drops peppermint extract
  • 1 teaspoon (optional) Espresso Powder

Mocha, Caramel Option

  • 1 tablespoon Guittard Cocoa Rouge
  • 2 teaspoons Instant espresso powder
  • 1 tablespoon Monkfruit Sweetener
  • 1/2 teaspoon LorAnns Oils Caramel Flavor

Vanilla

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste (yum!)
  • 1 tablespoon Monkfruit Sweetener

Instructions

Heat Milk either in microwave or on stove until hot.

  1. Add protein powder, collagen (if desired) and flavorings of choice and sweetener. 

  2. Whisk to blend, froth. Enjoy!
